Members of Specialist Firearms Command (
SCO19) , the Met's armed response unit, are transported along the Thames River in a t
Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) during a security exercise ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.
The RIB is operated by the Thames River Police, otherwise known as the Marine Policing Unit (MPU). The MPU has a number of Delta 1000TX model RIBs, made by Delta Power Group of Stockport. They can carry up to 10 armed Police and 2 crew on 12 seats. They are powered by Twin Volvo Penta outdrives and are able to reach speeds in excess of 50 knots. SCO-19 may utilise such RIBs in order to intercept and board a vessel on the Thames, as was being practised during the pre-Olympics exercise.
SCO19 were renamed in 2012 from CO19 due to the merging of 2 of the Met's commands, Central Operations (CO) and Specialist Crime Directorate (SCD), to form Specialist Crime & Operations.
