British Special Forces Operating In Mali

22.01.2013

British special forces are operating in Mali, it has emerged. Small numbers of Special Air Service (SAS) soldiers and MI6 operatives have been deployed to the African nation to help coordinate and assist French forces who are engaged in ongoing operations against jihadi groups in the north. The British special forces' role is thought, at the moment, to be a non-combat one, and may include training local military forces. Britain has also deployed spy and transport aircraft to the country.

The attack at the Algerian gas plant, along with French action in neighboring Mali, has effectively opened a new front in the war against Al-Qaeda and its affiliates. It was earlier reported that SAS and SRR troops have joined the hunt for the mastermind behind the gas plant attack, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, thought to be based in Mali.
